It’s early in the morning the sun is on the horizon slowly bringing a new day. The mountains are calling me, packing my cameras in the car with a cup of coffee. The trail leads me to the top of Mt Evans a place that my heart is at peace. I see so much life here from the wild flower to the rock formations that tell so many stories. I stand on a high peak looking down to the forest the trees stand tall and the roots are underground, the river runs freely and the animals are moving about. The mountain is so much alive here you can feel it in your soul. The reflections on the lakes shine so bright. A cool breeze brings the smell of the pine trees and flowers. I have spent many days on this mountain and taking photographs of what God put in front of me. The weather here can change so quickly. From rain to snow to wind, hail, thunder storms and the cold days blow right through your skin. As a photographer you put yourself in positions that can be so rewarding. I know that there is always some danger like hanging on some mountain side or getting close to wild animals. But the days are not always that way. The warm sunny days are a treat and the sunsets are magical here. The fall colors bring a new world. You can always find something new to photograph each day on the mountain trails. Timing and some luck plays a big part, but once you study and learn the mountain you can almost judge each day and what it will bring you. The greatest gift that I can bring to you is my photos and the stories they tell. I know that many people cannot get out and see the things I see through my lens. It brings me joy to see people look at my photos and see their eyes light up with a feeling that they are right in the photo themselves. When you drive to the top and look off on some peak you may see me taking photos. Getting that award winning photo you have to take the road less traveled or a trail of your own. Thousands of people visit this mountain each year a photographers dream. The mountain goats are one of the most photographed animals on the mountain and sometime you can get really close to them. I love this animal they are such a show off and each one has a personality on their own. The best photos are taken away from the main road and higher up on the peaks. Do not under estimate this animal I have seen them fight for their young. This graceful animal can dance across the mountains at ease. They can find green grass out on a mountain ledge or cool water trickling down a rock or a patch of snow in the summer to play in. I followed a small group one evening and they took me on a journey that I will never forget. The sun was setting in the west and the skies where glowing with reds, orange and yellows. I knew if I stayed with them I would get some great photos.
Out on the side of the mountain the goats where in the right place and the sun made them shine. There shadows became silo wets with the sun setting behind them. I sat with them for hours waiting for them to walk in front of the sunset. Its times like this you feel so full of joy and rewarded. I knew from the start of the day it was going to be a good one. Well it’s always a good day on Mt Evans, put you do get days that are so magic you just don’t want to leave. What a grand day with a lot of wows. When sun set s you can see the sun rays extending over the peaks like it was God’s hands closing the day. So I bring to you this book “Higher We Climb” I climbed higher to bring to you photos of my journeys on Mt Evans. Enjoy share this book with your friends. May your journeys be full of success, see you on the mountain trail.
You are always welcome at my campfire.
